The Coca Cola Dome

The Coca-Cola dome

Thebe Venue Management is a division of the Thebe Exhibitions & Projects Group which is dedicated to managing venues and already houses the long-term management contract of South Africa’s leading indoor multipurpose entertainment venue, the Coca-Cola dome and has been awarded the management rights to this venue for a third consecutive term until 2019.

Through Thebe Venue Management’s vision and management of this landmark venue, the Coca-Cola dome has been voted Johannesburg’s Best Concert Venue for over a decade, received a 5-Star status by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa, was recently voted 19th best arena in the world and won numerous other awards.

The success of a venue is measured in its occupancy and the standard of events it hosts. Thebe Venue Management has been successful in increasing the occupancy of the biggest indoor entertainment venue in Southern Africa, the Coca-Cola dome, concerts being one. From an occupancy of less than 40% before Thebe Venue Management took over management in 2004, to a steady annual occupancy of around 63%-65%.This was not only achieved through an aggressive sales drive but also through the development of content for the venue, through the Group’s other division Thebe Exhibitions & Projects, which has the resources, networks and necessary expertise to develop appropriate events for a specific venue.

Thebe has a strategy in place identifying convention centre and stadia sites as part of a comprehensive African Growth Strategy. The Group has undertaken research to accurately assess the size and landscape of the venue management potential throughout Africa. The Group’s strategy extends to Angola, Nigeria and Kenya where high level discussions are already underway to share the group’s expertise and skills with these countries and their venue assets.

Thebe Venue Management was recently contracted to handle the commercial management of the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, on behalf of BKS. The FIFA World Cup in 2010 exposed South Africa as a country brimming with opportunity and capable of staging events of the calibre seen in the First World. During the World Cup the Moses Mabhida Stadium played host to some of the most exciting matches of the tournament and the capacity and capability of the venue was shown to its full potential. Thebe believes that it is time to capitalise on the window of opportunity provided by the success of this event and to continue to build on the growth already seen in the sports tourism sector. This spectacular facility, which is just a stone’s throw from the Durban beach front, offers unlimited possibilities for the staging of major concerts, sporting events, conferences as well as exhibitions. With the world class sports facilities, skycar, restaurants, shops and corporate suites the Moses Mabhida Stadium offers something for everyone. The World Cup was just the start of what promises to be a busy and action packed future for the Stadium.

Thebe Venue Management also recently concluded a contract with a Nigerian consortium to manage the Abuja International Exhibition Centre (AIEC) which is currently being built in the commercial heart of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. Thebe is very excited at the opportunity for involvement in Nigeria, a country in which business tourism is currently booming. Infused with energy, passion and growth, Abuja is located in the centre of the country and is a must see for tourists. In more recent years the city has begun to emerge as a financial hub and the AIEC will open up opportunities for meetings, conferences, confexes and banqueting in a unique environment. The AIEC is set to become the benchmark for all future development projects in Nigeria and Thebe is proud to be at the forefront of this exciting venture.
