Green Design And Optimism Flourish At Decorex Joburg

Decorex Joburg closed the curtain on its 17th exhibition to rave reviews from visitors and exhibitions alike. Boasting a phenomenal 74% increase in visitor numbers from the trade sector, professionals in the field of interior design, architecture and lighting flocked to the show to experience the offerings of Southern Africa’s largest and most influential interior decor and design exhibition. Sponsored by Plascon with DStv as media partner and held at Gallagher Convention Centre from 5 to 9 August, just under 50 000 visitors experienced the magnificent products and services of more than 700 exhibitors, product launches and new show initiatives spread out over five halls.

Part of the show’s allure for trade professionals was the highly successful Conversations on Architecture conference – sponsored by CaeserStone - with a stellar cast of international and local gurus in the rapidly expanding architectural and design fields of digital fabrication and lighting; as well as Interior Design Dialogue, a one-day ifi seminar sponsored by Plascon, featuring international speakers from as far as Singapore, Mexico, Malaysia, Canada and the USA discussing Responsible Design as the driving force. Delegates to these conferences welcomed the international perspective on major issues facing the interior architecture and interior design industry. Another first for Decorex Joburg was the Lighting in Design trade-focused exhibition hosted in partnership with Crown Publications.

Themed ‘Breath of Fresh Air’, new initiatives flourished to intrigue, entertain and woo the thousands of consumers visiting the show for a great day out, decor inspiration and good deals, with positive comments on the slickness, elegance and organisational excellence pouring in. A popular new addition District Delicious was a haven for food lovers, while Ask the Experts – offered a hands-on experience for anyone interested in digital design. As fashion-conscious trendspotters, home-owners and avid do-it-yourselvers scouted the new decor directions, it was confirmed that Green is the new black ... together with Plascon’s 32 other new love-inspired colours launched at the show. An all-green housescape sprouting a whole new genre of eco-caring products, planet-saving inventiveness and thrift-chic style took top honours at the show.

What toxins are in your paint and in your carpets? What fumes surround you in bed every night? After an enlightening journey through The Plascon Living Green House, supplied by Hotelstuff.co.za/Greenstuff.co.za - judged the ‘Best Stand on Show’ - trend-driven visitors were spotting green issues alongside the proverbial ‘new black’.

“An eco-exhibit winning the coveted Overall Best Stand Award at an interior design show with over 700 exhibitors makes a very strong statement”, says Melanie Robinson, Decorex SA portfolio director. “The Living Green house, sponsored by Plascon and spearheaded by Hotelstuff.co.za/Greenstuff.co.za, sets a new standard in exhibition design and proves just how cool and cutting-edge green design has become. No more on the fringe, green design now leads the pack.”

Robinson adds that a company’s green ethos has become a deciding factor for a new generation of green-thinking consumers.

Inspiring, rather than intimidating, this inviting green space enthused visitors to make changes to their own lives at their own pace. It also caught the discerning eye of the judging panel: “We were blown away by the stand for ticking every box - from the structure design and the passionate, well-informed staff to the accessibility and range of the products.”

According to Richard Nuss, Plascon’s Green spokesperson, sponsoring the Living Green house initiative provided an important avenue to communicate the eco-benefits of green products. “The results have been immediate – and the project certainly helped to grow the demand for green products. Since Decorex Joburg we have been inundated with calls from consumers who are now interested to know more about our green compliant and sustainable products.”

According to Cairey Slater, Decorex SA general manager, Decorex Joburg continues to set the example with green exhibition practices, using the event as a role model towards greener living. “By bringing new, sometimes radical ideas to the show we can spark off positive energy to take exhibitors, staff and suppliers as well as visitors on the exciting, lifesaving journey of going green. Exhibition management is also aimed at making Decorex SA a zero waste event through various initiatives.”
