Meetings Industry Specialist Carol Weaving Scoops Top Performing Businesswoman of the Year Award

Carol Weaving, Managing Director of the Thebe Exhibitions and Projects Group was named Top Performing Businesswoman of the Year at the African Access National Business Awards.

The Top Performing Businessman of the Year is Andrew Mills of Boxer Superstores.

Presented by Topco Media, candidates competed in 20 categories. The awards were made in Johannesburg last week.

Ralf Fletcher, Chief Executive Officer of Topco Media says the awards are not only about winning but also about striving.

“This is the most fiercely contested awards programme in South African business. Getting into this company is an achievement in itself.”

“I am proud and honoured to receive this prestigious award,” says Weaving. “The empowerment of women is even more critical in today’s business world. I thank my team who continue to inspire and support me.”

Weaving, described by peers in the industry to be at the cutting edge of the meetings and exhibitions industry in Africa, leads one of the continent’s most forward-thinking and successful exhibition and events organisations. She is also former chairperson of the Exhibition and Event Association of Southern Africa.

She has been the driving force behind the Meetings Africa exhibition, the foremost business tourism platform in Africa. Meetings Africa is the continent’s largest annual gathering of the conference, special events and incentive travel sector. So successful is this event that South African Tourism acquired the exhibition – which Weaving managed until last year.

Established exhibitions owned by the group include Decorex SA, Mediatech Africa and the Business Opportunities and Franchise Expo.

The group is also bringing three brand new exhibitions to South Africa. The first of its kind to be held in South Africa, the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 27 to 29 July. This confex – endorsed by South African Tourism, the DTI and the Department of Sport and Recreation - will focus on the world class standard of sports and event facilities and services that South Africa has to offer for all top level international events. It will also highlight the exchange between sports tourism and the events industry.

Design in Hospitality is also the first confex of its kind to be held in South Africa. The inaugural two-day event will incorporate a high-level conference and a design-led exhibition, focusing exclusively on the hotel and hospitality industry. It will be hosted at The Forum in the Turbine Hall in Newtown, Johannesburg on 15 and 16 September.

The first-ever Retirement Expo to be held in South Africa promises to be a one of a kind ‘Expotainment’ event. It will offer everything required for those planning their retirement or looking to add excitement to their current retirement lifestyle. It will be hosted at the Coca-Cola dome in Johannesburg from 28 to 30 October. Century Property Developments is the presenting sponsor of the expo.

Weaving is also known for her excellent managerial skills, including managing venues. She landed the contract to manage the Coca-Cola dome in Johannesburg and has taken it from a venue which was the proverbial ‘white elephant’ to one of the leading venues in South Africa. This contract is valid until 2019 - the third term in a row.

A hands-on strategic operator, Weaving enthuses her team and empowers people to deliver, whatever it takes.
