BEAUTY AND BASICS BLEND AT DECOREX CAPE TOWN 29 April – 2 May 2011, CTICC, Cape Town

Ban the mundane, the boring and the beige by joining Decorex Cape Town on a quest for beautiful things and the practical know-how to incorporate it in the home.

“In this new era where ‘more is more’ has been replaced with doing more with less, choosing meaningful products for the home has become key to living beautifully”, says Cairey Slater, the show’s general manager.

Themed ‘Beauty and the Basics’, this year’s show expresses the Mother City’s creative energy through form, function, colour, shapes and textures. With its design-led, back-to-basics approach it guides visitors through the maze of creative possibilities. Workshops, special trend reporting and concept stands add diversity and interactivity to the show.

With the hand-made revolution heading for the stratosphere, new show features will also be celebrating the ‘proudly self-made’ phenomenon with free demonstrations, colour advice and new techniques to guide a new generation of ‘make-it-myself’ enthusiasts. “And as the expo opens on the day of the Royal Wedding, love will be celebrated with modern high teas, glamorous champagne bars and romance-inspired interiors, as well as screening of the royal wedding”, says Slater.

Decorex Cape Town forms part of the Decorex SA portfolio of interior design shows and is owned by Thebe Exhibitions & Projects Group. Plascon is the main sponsor and DStv is the media partner.

Highlights at the show include:

IID Trend Showcase with Dave Nemeth: This concept stand and Trend Talk Theatre capture the latest design directions featured in the IID Nemeth Trend Report. An exciting collaboration between renowned trend forecaster Dave Nemeth and the IID, it serves as an essential resource for all decorators, designers and retailers in the industry.

The highly visual presentation – which was recently presented in Paris - covers seasonal and annual colour direction as well as trend themes for the decor, interiors and furnishing industries. It also lifts the lid on key patterns in textiles and furnishing fabrics; key materials in the manufacture of furnishings, lighting, and accessories. Current and predicted consumer attitudes and design ethos are also revealed. While focused on trade professionals, a special presentation has been tailor-made to enlighten consumers on colour, materials and themes. Aspirational interiors both locally and internationally will also be shared.

The future of colour with Plascon: Fall in love with Rose Shadow and Rickshaw Red, the new nudes, vibrant urban brights, future forward metallics and greens from the forest floor. The Plascon Colour Forecast 2011 is on display at their concept stand, giving visitors the opportunity to experience colour in a décor setting. Four colour connoisseurs interpret these new love-besotted colours in four concept stands, each depicting one of the new colour palettes: Katie Thompson of REcreate rekindles romance with pastels and new nudes; Etienne Hanekom, art director of the award-winning magazine Plascon Spaces plays with vibrant brights without holding back; Gregory Mellor takes his cue from eco-sustenance while Yolande Wieners of D² Interiors conceptualizes a space in future forward greys, metallics and super-trendy aqua.

The on-trend colours for 2011 are inspired by love, a powerful force to change the world. “What we love is what’s worth protecting, nurturing and embracing,” says Anne Roselt, Plascon colour manager. “That’s why the 2011 colour theme pays tribute to love as a healing, balancing, powerful motivator to change for the better.” The latest issue of Plascon’s colour magazine Spaces with its bold pink theme will also be available at the stand. For Sumien Brink, editorial director and renowned commentator on décor trends, the love-inspired colours are great motivators to play with the transformative power of paint. “Like love, colour can transform the mundane to something magical. Paint remains the quickest and most cost-effective décor solution.”

BOS Tea House curated by Koncept Design: What do you get when you pair a young energetic brand with an extraordinary design minded person? A magnificent space and a fresh take on pairing food with tea.

With his background in merging food directions with design directions, Neil Stemmet of Koncept Design, a leading light on the South African food and interior design scene, curates this restaurant space using furniture from the past, the present and the future; combining the old and rustic with sleek Italian design. With its chic warehouse feel the emphasis is on re-cycling, re-using and re-inventing. Both laid-back and sophisticated this trend-forward pop-up restaurant even features a poster bed to recline on while having a cuppa.

The BOS Ice Tea brand with its funky pop art – and very local feel - inspired Stemmet to come up with a deliciously creative idea for pairing ice tea with food: think roasted prawns on ‘mosbrood’ toast with lumpfish crème fraiche served with BOS peach tea, or Cape Malayan bobotie and lemon salsa on jasmine rice served with BOS lemon tea.

Decadent Diner: The talented Young Cherry’s Designing, Jose’s Craft Steel Interiors and Stucco Italiano bring glamour to diner days. This designer space is devoted to sweet delights and seductive treats. Sip on blush-pink bubbly and bite into French styled patisseries. A perfect rendezvous for show guests to catch up on industry gossip and take a breather.

All Things Green House by Inside Living: Visitors can step into an eco-house where everything – from flooring and linen to pamper products for the home get the green thumbs-up. Inspired by how nature does things, this inviting eco-space shows how easy ‘converting to green’ can be; and that free-range living can be effortless, affordable and simultaneously stylish.

Cape Craft Design Institute: Explore handmade design by established and up and coming crafters from the Western Cape flaunting their magnificent products in an exquisitely styled environment. A must-visit for the discerning buyer of world class design craft.

Kitchens and bathrooms: Visitors can browse the luxe line-up of kitchen and bathroom essentials, and experience expert advice and money-saving ideas on tap. From blissful brassware and the latest in bath tubs, to tools for cooks, the lineup of exhibitors is extensive.

Dream Rooms & Fabrics area: Statement chairs. Layered interiors. Subtle sensuality. Afro-French goed Country and Romance gets an urban twist. Inspired by the show theme ‘Beauty and the Basics’, high-end exhibitors show their signature style and attention to detail in alluring roomsettings. Spot the design icons against the backdrop of luxurious textures and find out what the fabric houses have up their sleeve.

Villiera Wines Cap Classique Bar by Robert Thomson: Be part of the in-crowd at the show’s most sparkling social space, dedicated to the world’s trendiest drink. Themed ‘In the Night Garden’ this moody, sexy space depicts a Miami-style outdoor lounge with glow lights and outdoor love chairs. Created exclusively for Decorex Cape Town by Robert Thomson this is the ultimate meeting place for show guests looking for a glitzy spot to toast a business deal or simply relax over a glass of award-winning bubbly.

The DStv Theatre of Ideas: Visitors get the inside scoop on inventive solutions to decor dilemmas while brushing up on DIY-skills. Expect a block-buster programme filled with make-it-yourself inspiration and cooking demonstrations in a kitchen fitted with Whirlpool appliances. From paint techniques to picture framing DIY, easy entertaining advise for table setting and flower arranging, get the inspiration and know-how to do it all yourself.
