M-Net Cares CafÉ and Decorex Reading Corner promotes reading and literacy at Decorex Durban 2012

A partnership between M-Net Cares, Decorex Durban and Salvocorp (the official distributor of Staron by Samsung) will see the inclusion of the M-Net Cares Café and reading corner to the popular décor, design, lifestyle and home living exhibition which is to be held at the Durban Exhibition Centre (21 – 25 March). The initiative will see a collaboration between celebrities as well as local designers and businesses tie-in with M-Net Naledi Children's Literacy Project – a programme that encourages a love of reading in primary school children.

The M-Net Cares Café will be offering decor inspiration for those at Decorex Durban with the use of graphics and typography. The ‘Literacy and Typography’ theme of the M-Net Cares Café will be realised with a number of exciting and trendy colours and design items all produced by Salvocorp (the official distributor of Staron by Samsung). Staron is an innovative product that allows fresh, breakthrough designs. It comes in a range of different colours, is easy to maintain and is ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, restaurants, hotels and other public spaces. Using a palette of white, blue and grey, as well as flooring with wording printed on, 3D letter bar stools, the M-Net Cares Café area will be characterised by a very clean and trendy feel.

The M-Net Cares Café will feature bespoke bookshelves created by prominent designers including KOOP, Anatomy Design, Aidan Bennetts Design, Joe Paine and others. Visitors to the show are encouraged to bring second hand children’s books to place in the bookshelves, which will then be donated to the M-Net Naledi Children’s Literacy Project that continues their campaign of instilling the love of reading in children.

The M-Net Cares Café furniture, including a trendy counter with a curved back wall, tables, 6 bookshelves, letter bar stools and Samsung televisions will all be donated to a library supported by M-Net Cares.

Children from Umthombo Street Children and St Thomas Children’s Home in the Durban area will also have the opportunity to enjoy a magical reading experience with well-known storyteller Gcina Mhlophe at the M-Net Cares Decorex Reading Corner in Durban on Wednesday the 21st March between 09:00 and 16:00. Children aged 7-12 years will be transported to and from the venue and treated to a fun-filled day of reading and activities including interactive word games, lunch and giving out goody bags and books.

The M-Net Naledi Children’s Literacy Project was launched in 2010, and was inspired by the broadcaster’s long-running corporate initiative - the M-Net Literary Awards. In its first year, over 300 grade three learners from less privileged schools in Gauteng benefited from the five week M-Net Naledi reading programme. Whilst in 2011 the initiative expanded to include 1000 learners in four provinces (Kwa-Zulu Natal, Western Cape, Free State and Gauteng) with workshops being conducted in English as well as isiZulu, seSotho and isiXhosa.

In 2012 the M-Net Naledi Children’s Literacy project will develop even more as it grows from being a 6 week to 12 week programme covering five provinces and including 1500 children from previously disadvantaged schools. The M-Net Naledi Children’s Literacy Project is in partnership with Readers Society of South Africa (project coordinators), Project Literacy (workshop facilitators), and is endorsed by the Department of Education.

To make a contribution to the M-Net Naledi Children’s Literacy Project, as well as to enjoy a host of the latest trends in kitchens, bathrooms, décor and lifestyle visit Decorex Durban at the Durban Exhibition Centre, between 21-25 March 2012.

The Decorex SA portfolio will also see exhibitions held in Cape Town (26-29 April 2012) and Johannesburg (8-12 August 2012). Decorex Durban is proudly sponsored by Plascon, with
M-Net as the media partner.
